Hiking in Los Tilos de Moya

01/11/2023 - Ruth González

The Los Tilos de Moya trail It is one of the easiest and beautiful places to visit in Gran Canaria. Therefore, we recommend it if you are starting with the hiking trails in Gran Canaria or if you want to go with children. In the following lines we tell you everything about this Special Natural Reserve, as well as what else you can see in Moya with recommendations for eating. Here we go!

Special Natural Reserve of Los Tilos de Moya: flora and fauna

This Special Natural Reserve is located within the Doramas Rural Park, specifically, in a 2-kilometer stretch within the Moya ravine. Here is located one of the small towns that remain of laurisilva in Gran Canaria. Its flora and fauna is made up of typical species of laurel forest, many of them endemisms. We list the most relevant below:

  • Flora: Salviblanca and Doramas Rooster's Crest (both in danger of extinction), the til (tilos or tiles), the viñátigo and the laurel. We can also find other Canary species such as the bejeque or verol and the bicacaro.
  • Fauna: Turquoise pigeon and rabiche pigeon

Circular Los Tilos de Moya

The mythical Los Tilos trail It is a 1,8 km circular route that starts next to the Los Tilos Restaurant. In this same area there are some parking spaces. Of course, go early, as the trail is quite busy and places are limited. What the path itself is, is quite flat, except for a small initial rise. It was closed from February to June 2023 due to landslides, but it is now reopened.

Part of the path passes next to a secondary road, not very busy, but it is fenced, so there is no danger. Therefore, it is one of the trails to do with children in Gran Canaria. You can perfectly take half an hour in doing the entire route that ends in the Los Tilos Interpretation Center. The trail is completely signposted from start to finish. Besides, There are several benches along the route. in case you want to make a stop to rest or eat.

✔ Los Tilos de Moya how to get there

To get here, as we said, there is no loss. By entering the Los Tilos restaurant in your GPS, you can park around it and in a few meters see the beginning of the trail. The entire path is well signposted, so you do not need to follow any GPS.

✔ Extension of the route, for more experienced hikers

On the other hand, if your intention is visit Los Tilos by Moya and, in addition, you want to walk more in the Moya and Guía area, we suggest the following route extension. In this case, you can park in the town of Moya and walk along the road to Los Tilos Restaurant, one of our recommended restaurants to eat in the countryside. Walking along the road is quite safe and it is just a few meters to the start of the trail. After doing the Los Tilos hike, the mythical one we mentioned before, you can continue the route towards Santa Cristina, in the municipality of Guía.

Later you would have to go through the Moya ravine until ending in the center of this same town. We recommend this addition to the Los Tilos route only for expert hikers or athletes, since the journey is about 15 km through the mountains, that is, almost 4 hours of walking.

Likewise, at the time we took the route, There were some parts where the road was not very clear. (vegetation on the path), which made it difficult for us to identify the path. We asked the locals in the scattered houses so as not to make mistakes on the way back to Moya town.

Track of the Los Tilos de Moya route + extension

In the following link we leave you the route track expansion that also passes through Los Tilos de Moya in case you wanted to do it and avoid getting lost. Especially for the remaining 13 kilometers, since the Los Tilos part has no loss. If you don't know how to download the route and follow it from your GPS watch or smartphone with the Guru Maps app, here we explain it to you. Finally, if you want support us so that we continue creating content for you about Gran Canaria, we will be grateful if you purchase any of our tracks, either to enjoy incredible routes or as a donation.

What to see in Moya

Once in the town of Moya, we recommend Visit the Church of La Candelaria and appreciate the beautiful views from the viewpoint behind it. Likewise, a few steps away is the Tomás Morales House Museum. A renowned Canarian poet.

Finally, we suggest you take a walk through its pedestrian streets and delight yourself with the typical sweets of the area: Moya's biscuits and sighs. In particular, we recommend a visit to the little shop-bar of Juana House. A very authentic place run by an elderly lady from the town and her family.

Restaurants in Moya

As we said, when we did the route we had something to drink before leaving on the Los Tilos restaurant (now closed), In the town of Moya you have The Trasper, Casa Pedro y Canary Roots (a little further from the town center). The food is good in all of them. On the other hand, if you have the chance to travel to Fontanales, we love it. The Colonial of Fontanales. A restaurant located in an old two-story house with a very pampered menu. Here you will be able to try up to 7 types of cheeses from different cheese shops in the area, ropavieja (like you haven't eaten before), among others.

I just discovered the website looking for this path to start with the children and I loved everything I see. I'm from the island but there are thousands of corners that I don't know, so I save it for small family getaways. Thank you so much for everything you do!
