What to see in Zhangjiajie: the Avatar Mountains and surrounding areas
As we said, in this area of ChinaWithin the province of Hunan, we find three main tourist attractions, all three about 40 minutes from each other. El Zhangjiajie National Park, Tianmen Mountain and the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge with its Grand Canyon. So, if you want to visit them all, reserve at least three full days for this part of your trip to China. The map that we show you below is quite illustrative. Now let's go with the essentials by area!

1. Zhangjiajie National Park: What to see and useful information
El zhangjiajie national park, also popularly known as the Avatar Park in China, stands out for its pillar-shaped mountains that seem to float in the middle of the fog (characteristic of this area). They have one average height of 200 meters, although we find them of different sizes throughout this natural space that occupies 4.810 hectares. Given the dimensions, please note that if you want tour the entire park and mountains of Zhangjiajie, you will need at least four days. However, we believe that with a full day you will be able to explore the Essential scenic areas to see in Zhangjiajie National ParkWe'll share them with you below.

- Golden Whip Stream Trail: is a path next to a stream between rock formations. The distance is 7,5 kilometers each way (It is usually done only in one direction, and then visit Huangshi Village). If you are lucky, you will meet various monkeysHiking the entire trail will take you half a morning. If you want to have time to visit several scenic areas, we recommend starting early. Keep in mind that from here you'll be viewing the rock formations from below.

- Yuanjiajie Scenic Area: To see the rock formations from above, we recommend this area. Here there are several attractions such as the famous "Heaven Pillar" or "Hallelujah Mountain", one of the most brutal pillars in the park (the one in the previous photo). Here we also find a natural stone bridge. It is very close to Bailong elevator, the largest open-air elevator in the world with a height of 326 meters. You can leave this part to visit in the afternoon. In the morning all the groups of Asians go and they also get up early.

If you had more time to discover other places to see in Zhangjiajie, notes Huangshi Village (you can do it after the trail) and also Tianzi Mountain. Each one at one end of the park and to ascend both, you must pay the corresponding cable car. The Bailong elevator is also not included in the park admission price.
How to get around Zhangjiajie National Park
The distances within Zhangjiajie are long, it is only possible to get from one scenic spot to another by bus, plan your routes VERY WELL to make the most of your time. The Cable cars and Bailong Elevator are not included in the park entrance fee. There are special packs if you buy several cable cars and elevator together.

Zhangijajie National Park ticket prices and schedule
- 💵 Price:The tickets They cost us 227 yuan (about €30 per person) and they serve you for 4 days. This is the high season price from March to November. Out of season it is 147 yuan. You can buy your ticket in advance at this page (also for elevators and cable cars). Even so, you must then go to the ticket office to exchange your tickets with your passport.
- ⏰ The Access hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 17:30 p.m.. The most elevators / cable cars They close at 18:00 p.m.. If I'm not mistaken, the free bus service inside the park too (check because they can extend it according to demand). Remember that you can enter through one door and leave through another, there are five entry and exit points! Then you can take a taxi or Didi to Wulingyuan, they are very economical.
Where to stay when visiting the National Park
As we discussed, the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park It has five entrances. Without a doubt, the one who We recommend the one in the eastern area next to the town of Wulingyuan. Because? Due to its short distance to the park access and where you can buy tickets. Also for its wide range of accommodation and restaurants. Our hotel was only a 5 minute walk from the access. Is Yoba Boutique Hotel and it was great. It cost us about €40 a night and had breakfast included, we left you a photo of the hall. Also, there was a good restaurant right next door.

2. Tianmen Mountain: Zhangjiajie's Heaven's Gate
La Tianmen Mountain is another gem to see in the Zhangjiajie areaIt's located in the city of the same name, about 40 minutes from Wullingyuan (our first base camp). We stayed here the day we arrived by plane from Shanghai. 5 minutes walk to the cable car to visit Tianmen Mountain the next day. Below we share the activities to do in Tianmen Mountain.
- Ride the world's longest cable car to the top, having a length of 7,5 kilometers. During the 30-minute ride, you'll be able to enjoy panoramic views of the mountainous landscape and lush forests (fog permitting).
- Tour the famous Heaven's Door, a natural cave 131 meters high, 57 meters wide and 60 meters deep. The Gate of Heaven is a sacred place and one of the most impressive natural formations on the mountain. You can also walk up, which is 999 steps to get here. We're sharing a stock photo since we weren't lucky with the weather.

- Walk along its paths next to the cliffs at a height of 1,430 meters above sea level. There are two glass trails, neither are included in the Tianmen Mountain entrance price. If you're lucky with the weather, you'll have some stunning views of the landscape. Still, it is very exciting to stop by here if you are not afraid of heights.

Tianmen Mountain Price and Opening Hours
- 💵 Price: There are several types of tickets (all €35,30 per person). We recommend booking in advance, we took the Line A Package on this page. Even so, you must then go to the ticket office to exchange your tickets with your passport.
- ⏰ The Hours are 07:30-18:00 (last access at 16:00).
3. The Glass Bridge and the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon
Another of the places to see in Zhangjiajie is the famous longest and highest Glass Bridge in the world, which crosses the spectacular Zhangjiajie Grand CanyonFrom the Glass Bridge you will have breathtaking views of the canyon, which undoubtedly far surpasses the glass structure itself.

The bridge has a height of 260 m from the canyon, it measures 430 m long and 6 m wide. In addition, it is built of 99 transparent glass panels with the capacity to hold 800 people. You can cross it on foot, they give you non-slip shoes (at least on rainy days). From here you can also go bungee jumping. The truth is that if you have vertigo, don't go haha.

We besides cross the Crystal Bridge, we bought a ticket that included an activity package to explore the area in a fun way. This is, cross the canyon with zip line, take a virtual reality tour, go down to the base of the canyon on a slide and, finally, cross the canyon by boat with hiking. The route ends at the park exit where you can take a taxi back to Wulingyuan. So much the zip line, the trail and the boat tour next to waterfalls, they are very worth it.

Opening hours and tickets for the Glass Bridge and Grand Canyon
As we told you, we We booked a ticket that allowed you to use 5 attractions in the area to choose from 7 activity options. The zip line to cross the canyon, the boat tour through the canyon, the elevators or slides to go down to the base of the canyon and the virtual reality tour.
- Crystal Bridge and Grand Canyon Price: approximately €22. The price of the most complete route that we booked was €37. You can See all options and book in advance at this page.
- ⏰ Opening hours: from 7: 30 to 16: 30.
- Estimated duration of the activity: 3/4 hours (depending on if you do the full route like us). Then add about 45 minutes each way to and from Wulingyuan.
How to get to Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge
El Zhangjiajie Crystal Bridge It is about 40 minutes from Wulingyuan. To get to the famous Glass Bridge in Zhangjiajie we used Didi, it cost us only 35 yuan! This is 5 euros. The exit from the park is different from the entrance, since the boat travels through a large part of the canyon. As soon as you leave, the taxi drivers will approach you, we negotiated with one because we already had the one-way price as a reference. If you don't feel like negotiating, ignore them and book a Didi (Uber) from Alipay.
Where to stay in Zhangjiajie (Recommended hotels)
As we discussed in each tourist attraction in Zhangjiajie, We recommend taking the city of Wulingyuan as a base camp to visit the Zhangjiajie National Park and the Crystal Bridge. To visit Tianmen Mountain, it's much better to stay in Zhangjiajie city. This will definitely make it easier to combine the visit with your arrival or departure day in the region.
- Recommended hotel in central Zhangjiajie: Zhangjiajie Hero Boutique HotelIt's newly renovated and just a 5-minute walk from the cable car that takes you to Tianmen Mountain.
- Recommended hotel in Wulingyuan: Yoba Boutique Hotel, just a 5-minute walk from the access to Zhangjiajie National Park and the park's ticket sales area.
How to get to Zhangjiajie
As we mentioned before, the city of Zhangjiajie is accessible by several means of transportation:
- PlaneZhangjiajie Hehua Airport has domestic flights from major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai (from Shanghai it's a 2,5-hour flight for about €106). From the airport to the city center it's just a 10-minute taxi ride (about €12).
- TrainThere are bullet trains from Fenghuang (1-hour journey), Changsha, Guangzhou, and other major cities. Traveling by train is a fast option, and Zhangjiajie Railway Station is right in the city center. You can see it on This page contains connections and schedules.
- BusBuses connect Zhangjiajie with nearby cities, although this option can be less convenient. Buses are generally slower given the distances in China, but they are an economical option for travelers on a budget with plenty of time.
Itinerary: How many days are needed to see Zhangjiajie?
To make the most of your visit to the area, we recommend at least 3 full days; this was the itinerary that we follow to visit the essential things to see in ZhangjiajieThis will depend on your arrival time, but you can use it as a reference:
- Day 1Visit Tianmen Mountain and its main attractions, such as the cable car, Heaven's Gate, and the glass walkway (arrival in Zhangjiajie city the previous evening). In the afternoon, transfer to Wulingyuan.
- Day 2Departure from Wulingyuan to visit the Glass Bridge and Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon in the morning. In the afternoon we had time to explore one of the scenic areas of Avatar Park (Yuanjiajie) And the Bailong Elevator.
- Day 3: Tour the Golden Whip Stream and Huangshi Village trail, also known as Yellow Stone Village. Around 13.30:XNUMX p.m. we were already taking the Didi to Zhangjiajie station to take our train to Fenghuang. Of course, we got up quite early to be able to see everything in the morning.

Essential tips for visiting Zhangjiajie
To make your visit to the Avatar Mountains region as enjoyable as possible, keep these tips in mind:
- Visit in spring or fall to avoid crowds and enjoy pleasant weather. If possible, avoid making any of your visits coincide with a Sunday, as it is the day the Chinese take off and the crowds are larger.
- Buy your tickets in advance.
- Plan your itinerary wellThere are many places to see in the region, and poor planning will make you waste a lot of time.
- Take your passport: essential to access the three attractions we share with you in this post.
- Get a map in English at your hotelSome maps within the park are only in Chinese.
- Wear comfortable clothing and shoes for walkingAlso bring warm clothing, as the temperature at higher altitudes can change drastically once you take the cable car. This applies both to Tianmen Mountain and the National Park.
- Check the weather forecast. Zhangjiajie is a VERY rainy and foggy area. We recommend checking the forecast, and if it's going to rain, bring quick-drying clothes and waterproof shoes. In any case, many shops sell umbrellas, ponchos, and even plastic shoe covers. Be prepared.

Hi ! Ruth!
First of all, thank you so much for your blog and your videos, they have really helped us a lot in planning our route through China.
I had some doubts: We have two full days in Zhangjiajie, we had thought of one in the morning doing the Line B Ticket (Grand Canyon + Glass Bridge) + 4 of 6 Activities (Multiple Options Available) and in the afternoon going to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park until it closes (route within the park still to be determined).
The next day we'll dedicate everything to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, and when we leave we'll go down to sleep in Zhangjiajie city instead of Wulingyan.
The next day, since it's Sunday and it will be crowded as you mentioned in your videos, I still need to decide what to do in the morning and then go to Furong in the afternoon. The following day, Monday, I'll go to Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park in the morning—which package did you choose?—and then go to Fenghuan in the afternoon.
Any suggestions? We'd like to get the same packs as yours since they look really fun and interesting.
Thank you very much for everything.
regards
Hi, we didn't go to Furong, I don't know how the logistics work... the truth is there are always people in China, I think it doesn't matter if it's a Sunday... I would plan your visit according to the weather, since we had bad luck in Tianmen and there was no visibility!
In our case, we dedicated one morning to Tianmen (arriving the night before in the city of Zhangjiajie), the next morning we went to the Grand Canyon and in the afternoon to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, on the third day we also dedicated a morning to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and that same day at midday we went to Fenghuang where we spent a night 🙂
I hope this helps, hugs!
Good Ruth y Jorge,
I appreciate all the information you've provided; it's shed a lot of light on this part of China for me.
We are leaving from Tenerife in September 2025, and we will be in the area for 2 days, then we will go to Fenghuang.
My plan is: Arrive at the airport from Xi'an in the evening. We'll go to Didi and stay at your hotel in Zhangjiajie. My initial plan was to spend a full day in Tianmen and another in Zhanjiajie National Park. But I'm rethinking the route I had in mind after seeing you. My initial plan was to spend a full day in Tianmen and another in Yuanjiajie National Park. Now my plan is:
Day 1: Tianmen. From what I've seen in the videos and read on this blog, maybe by going early, we'll be able to complete it in one morning? I've seen it involve taking the cable car up, walking along the cliffs on the crystal-clear paths, and then going down the steps. My plan is to head to Wulingyuan around 13 p.m., drop off my things at the hotel, and then go see the Avatar Mountains from above, just like you did, to avoid the hustle and bustle.
My question is, do you think it's feasible to do all this in one day?
Day 2: I'd do the Golden Whip Stream trail early in the morning. I don't know if it's too much to add the Grand Canyon, with its glass bridge, in the afternoon, or if you'd recommend Huangshi Village and Tianzi Mountain instead.
My initial idea was to "forgo" the Grand Canyon, but by organizing it this way, I'd still have time. Since we're already there, I'm considering doing it, although it's not something I'm particularly drawn to, nor would I want to sacrifice anything from Yuangjiajie and Tianmen to see this. If it's a good fit, all the better, but if not, I wouldn't mind either.
How do you see organizing that route for those two days this way? And for day two, what would you recommend most?
Greetings and thank you!!!
Hi!!! I see you're into partying like us, haha.
If you organize it well and go to all the places first thing in the morning, you'll have time, just keep in mind the travel times between the 3 locations and that China itself is not easy, you always lose time taking didis, looking for directions, etc. But if I could, I think I would do it like you 🙂
We weren't lucky at Tianzi Mountain, with all the fog I can't even tell you if it's worth it... and I liked Huangshi Village, but having visited Yuangjiajie and the Golden Whip Stream I think it's enough to give you an idea... We really liked the Grand Canyon, especially the walking route along the river... the canyon is very beautiful, and add to that the glass bridge, the boat route and the zip line, it's cool!
You've got a full day on day 2, right? I mean, you're leaving for Fenghuang in the morning on day 3? I don't know how frequent the trains are, but it's only an hour away by bullet train. If you catch one at 19 p.m., Fenghuang is VERY, VERY beautiful at night, so I wouldn't leave that out either...
I hope I've helped, neighbor! Hugs and enjoy!
Hello Ruth!
For the Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge, what package did you buy that included attractions like the zip line? Could you please share the link with me?
For the national park, can you also share the link to the package you purchased? Can we enter the park twice with this package? Once one day and again the next?
Hi Alicia!
For the Grand Canyon and the Glass Bridge, we chose the option to choose 5 of the 7 attractions. I don't see it on the list right now, but if you look at the link I shared, there's a package called "Grand Canyon Line B (Grand Canyon + Glass Bridge) + Zhangjiajie National Forest Park 4-Day Ticket (Adult)," and I understand that buying the attraction package is cheaper. Once there, you can definitely book the other activities!
https://www.trip.com/t/Qe5igaQgXO2
For the National Park, the ticket is valid for 4 days (includes bus to tour the park)… it cannot be purchased for 1 or 2 days, so it is the standard ticket:
https://www.trip.com/t/JzlgZnRgXO2
Hi ! RuthThank you so much for all the information you shared! It has been the best help in preparing our itinerary for China, my partner and I are very grateful.
Could you tell us here, since I can't find it on the blog, how did you get from Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang?
Is there a link to buy tickets online?
regards
Hi Gonzalo, you're welcome 🙂
We took the bullet train from Zhangjiajie City Station to Fenghuang (I don't remember if the station was called Fenghuanggucheng or Fenghuang cheng, something like that haha
We tell you about it here:
https://localguidegrancanaria.com/que-ver-en-fenghuang-china/
And to buy tickets and see schedules here:

A hug and enjoy a lot!
Goodnight, Ruth y Jorge.
First of all, thank you for your dedication to both the blog (it is extremely detailed) and your YouTube channel (which, by the way, I am subscribed to).
We are planning to travel to China, also in May like you. We have a question, here is the first one:
When buying tickets to the national park, we are not sure which one to choose, whether we have to do it separately or if there is a package of everything together.
We want the ones that are for several days, which include everything (elevators, cable car, activities: zip line, etc.). I hope you can help us out, I'm sure that as we continue with the preparations for the trip, more doubts will assail us.
Thank you in advance, greetings!!
Hi Beatriz!!!! I'm glad you found the info useful!!
Tickets for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park are for 4 days and this only includes access and free transportation on the buses that run through the park. Then you have to choose the route you are going to take within the park to buy the “extras” that you are really going to use. We bought this part inside the park, there are ticket offices and packs are sold. Given the little information we found, we could not have organized it better…
Regarding the zipline, do not confuse Zhangjiajie Canyon with Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (or the city of Zhangjiajie). As you can see on the map in this post, the park and the canyon are super separate areas with different entrance tickets 🙂
I understand that it can be confusing, we have tried to explain it in the best way possible hehe and in the links we share you can buy the tickets!
Greetings and enjoy this trip a lot!!
Hi ! RuthThank you again for sharing your experience and your answers.
Could you share with me the link where you bought the access to Tianmen Mountain and Heaven's Gate and tell me which route you took so you didn't have to walk up (A, B, C?) as well as share the purchase link but for Hallelujah Mountain and also tell me which route you took on this second mountain? Thank you very much in advance 🙂
Hi Alicia! You're most welcome.
We at Tianmen bought this: Line A package (Tianmen Mountain Cableway->Tianmen Cave Express Line) (Adult)
Purchase link: https://www.trip.com/t/mAaArCNgXO2
For Hallelujah Mountain you have to buy the ticket for the national forest park which is valid for 4 days and includes bus transportation throughout the park, then the elevators, cable car, etc. are separate. Here is the link:
https://www.trip.com/t/JzlgZnRgXO2
We stayed in Wulingyuan and we actually did a scavenger hunt to get to Hallelujah Rock, we thought the park was smaller haha. We took a cable car and several buses… I don’t remember the numbers right now, but once there you can ask for the shortest route depending on which access to the Park you choose… I recommend you take a look at our YouTube guide, it’s easier to understand everything and we even show the map of the park 🙂
The second day we organized it better and did the tour along the Golden Whip Stream as we explained in the blog!
I hope I have helped!!
Enjoy a lot 🙂
Hello. I found the package you mentioned to be very interesting. For €37 it included entry to the Canyon and the Crystal Bridge (and from what I understand) it also included doing 5 activities such as zip-lining, a boat ride, virtual reality and slides? Is that correct? It's not very clear to me from the link.
Thanks in advance
Hello Lorena!! From the page https://www.trip.com/t/Qe5igaQgXO2We bought this one: “Line B ticket + glass bridge + 7-choose-5 project package (Adult)”, you can choose 5 out of 7 activities. We took the zipline, the virtual reality, the slide, the boat tour and then the other boat after the trail. Highly recommended really 🙂
Enjoy!
Hello!! The trip was amazing. I'm planning to go with my father. The map you show in the video is great for understanding the park very well because without knowing it, it's difficult to imagine everything you explain. Would it be possible to download that map in some way? Thanks!! And thanks to your contribution, it's much easier to plan the trip. We're going to add a stop in the city of Furong! Let's see how it goes!!
Hi Luis! We are glad that the information is useful. The truth is that we do not have the digital map, I don't know if you can find something similar by googling... but if not, you can take a screenshot... enjoy the trip! A hug!
Hey.
I'm going to travel to China on my own next year and first of all I wanted to thank you for your blog. Zhangjiajie is the area where I'm having the hardest time deciding on a hotel. I don't want to change hotels, so I'd rather stay in Wulingyan and take a Didi to Zhangjiajie the day I visit Tianmen and the day I return. I have several reservations in Wulingyan with free cancellation. The hotel you recommend on your blog (Yoba) appears on other websites with another name, such as Easy Stay. I imagine it's because each time they translate it in a different way, but for example, on TripAdvisor, in addition to appearing with another name, it has a different location. Did you have this confusion when booking hotels too? And finally, did they give you the name of the hotel in Chinese before you arrived? Greetings and thanks in advance.
Hi Oscar! Thank you very much for your comment! What a good question! Haha Yes, once there the hotels change their name, everything is obviously in Chinese, we managed by looking for the addresses that Booking gave us and with the photos… The chat on booking.com is also very useful to ask the hotel for the address in Chinese. Then you just have to enter it in Didi and that's it!
If you arrive in Zhangjiajie by plane or train, you can perhaps take advantage of the opportunity to stay there and do Tianmen as we did, but what you propose is not a bad idea either if it seems more comfortable to you. The Didis are very cheap and the trip was just under an hour…
I hope I have helped!
A hug
