On this occasion we want to share with you a circular hiking route that starts from Montaña Alta and passes through Monte Pavón, in the municipality of Santa María de Guía. This route of hiking in Gran Canaria It is also known as Between Farmhouses, in as much as It passes through different farmhouses, farms and cheese factories in the north of the island. In addition, every year a race with that name of different distances is held. If that sounds good to you, below we will give you all the details in case you would like to do this route on your own.
Hiking through Montaña Alta and Monte Pavon
As we mentioned, this hiking route is circular and, therefore, begins and ends in the town of Montaña Alta, one of the places what to see in Santa María de Guía. The main attraction of this route is Monte Pavón, known as the Ireland of Gran Canaria. This entire area is ranched, mainly sheep.
In fact, The trail passes through paths that are fenced to prevent the herd from escaping and not having to prohibit passage. So you will have to open them and close them again. Therefore, do not be surprised if the track passes through "closed" places.
Another attraction during the route is walking surrounded by the centenaries of the Pines of Gáldar which are part of the Black Mountain Natural Monument and the Protected Landscape of Las Cumbres. As you can imagine from the photos, it is a very humid and cool area, hence everything is so green. However, in the summer months the landscape is more arid. In fact, during the third stage of the Camino de Santiago de Gran Canaria There is a part that goes through Mount Pavón and you can see how dry it was. Still, if there is no heat wave, In summer it is also a cool area, since the entire trail runs between 900 and 1.300 meters of altitude.
Characteristics of the Entre Cortijos route
The total distance is about 13,4 kilometers with a positive gradient of up to 670 meters, so it is quite flat taking into account the orography of Gran Canaria. We did it at a good pace, since On the plains we jogged and it took us 2 hours and 50 minutes.. This includes stops to record and take photos. By the way, at the end of this article you have the video of this route with more details.
Distance | 13,2 km |
Approximate duration | 3-4 h |
Total promotion | 630 m |
Level | Intermediate |
Circular | Yes |
Picnic / provisioning area | No |
We recommend you bring trail shoes with cleats for wet days, as there is a lot of mud and even some gravel areas that can be more slippery. In any case, keep in mind that the last 2-3 kilometers are on asphalt, although on a very little traveled and beautiful road.

If you want to know how to download the track in .gpx format and follow it from your GPS or smartphone with the Guru Maps app, here We explain it to you. Montaña Alta Viewpoint and Cheese House, Guide
On the other hand, since the route starts from Montaña Alta, we recommend that you take the opportunity to visit the famous Montaña Alta viewpoint with 360º views north, south, east and west. To get here you can enter Mirador de Montaña Alta in Google Maps. There is a large parking lot here, so you can go in your car at the end of the walk. The path to the Montaña Alta Viewpoint is about 300 meters along some stairs, making it not accessible for strollers or people with reduced mobility.
Finally, right next to the Montaña Alta viewpoint is the Cheese House where you can try or buy some Protected Designation of Origin cheeses to take away from the Guide. We highlight the cheeses made from vegetable rennet: half-flower and flower cheese. We recommend you the flower cheese from Guía El Cortijo de Caideros. You can also try cheeses from the cheese shops that you will pass along the route. For example, that of half flower from Cortijo de Pavón and Matured sheep cheese from the La Caldera cheese factory. In any case, during the walk the track passes by both cheese factories in case you want to take a break 🙂
