Circular gravel bike route through Girona: two loops between Banyoles and Empordà
La Ruta It starts and ends in the center of Gironaso it's completely circular. We did it on a Wednesday, very calmly and without any rush, but even so they are 149 km with 1.539 m of ascentSo it's a good idea to have some stamina in your legs. The interesting thing is that the route is divided into two loopsOne route heads north towards Banyoles, and the other east through the Empordà region. If you don't fancy tackling the entire 150 km in one go, you can do just one of the two and leave the other for another day; you'll find the track at the end of this post.

We started out from Girona, heading towards the first loop, towards Banyoles, home to the famous lake where triathletes train for swimming. As is almost always the case on routes starting from Girona, the first few kilometers take us away from the industrial areas, until we finally connect with the singletrack and dirt tracks. Beyond Banyoles, many more dirt tracks appear, super rideable and fast – exactly what you want when you're out on a gravel bike.

In a section of the motorway, we got a little confused because a bike lane was closed (it will probably reopen in the coming weeks), and we didn't quite connect with the second loop, which heads to the right of Girona. On this side, we found several secondary roads with very little car traffic, a real treat for a gravel bike, combined with a good percentage of dirt tracks. The best part of this section is the small cobbled villageswith its charming churches and the occasional café where you can stop for an ice cream, a slice of cake, or a healthy meal to recharge your batteries and keep pedaling. In total, around a 38% of the route is dirt (about 57 km), although the second loop is much more off-road than the first.
