The Fortress of Santa Lucía, a key site
La Fortaleza is one of most important archaeological sites of Gran Canaria and a symbol of Aboriginal resistance (formerly associated with the legend of Ansite). This impressive geological formation It is made up of three large rocks: the Fortaleza Grande, the Fortaleza Chica and Titana.
Access is very simple, through a a short path with stone steps which lead you directly to its famous natural and man-made caves. You can easily park at the start of the trail, where the visitor center is located. (just a 5-minute walk to the top).

Upon ascending the stairs, you will reach one of the main caves that runs through La Fortaleza Grande from side to sideas if it were a natural tunnel. From here, the views of the ravine are spectacular. There is also the option of skirt the fortress on its left side to discover more caves that served as homes and storage for the ancient Canarians.

To better understand the place, we recommend visiting the La Fortaleza Interpretation CenterLocated just a few meters from the parking lot, this exhibit explains in a very educational way the life of the Aboriginal people in this location, which functioned as a fortified settlement and possibly a religious temple. La Sorrueda Dam: the palm oasis
Right at the foot of La Fortaleza is the Tirajana Dam, popularly known as La Sorrueda DamFrom its viewpoint you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of Gran Canaria: a large rocky massif in the middle of the water surrounded by one of the most beautiful palm groves on the islandThe contrast of the water (when it has rained), the reddish stone, the Canary Island palms, and the cacti creates a landscape that seems straight out of a movie. An advice: When you park in El Guriete, walk along the path that descends a few meters towards the edge of the ravine. The views from the parking lot are good, but if you go down a little (just 2 minutes), the The view of the palm grove and the depth of the ravine will leave you speechless.Once you've taken the obligatory photo, continue driving for about 10 more minutes to reach La Sorrueda.
