Agaete and Puerto de Las Nieves, a must-see

30/10/2020 Por Local Guide Gran Canaria Leave a Comment

If you want to know all the things to do in Agaete village you are in the right place. Agaete is located northwest of Gran Canaria and it is much loved by all the islanders. Probably because it is one of the areas of the island that has maintained its essence 100%. It is located about half an hour from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. On the other hand, it is just over an hour from Maspalomas.

In this post we want to highlight the main beauties of Agaete, which are not few. We list them below so you do not miss a single one.

Things to do in Agaete

1. Puerto de Las Nieves

The Puerto de Las Nieves is the fishermen district of Agaete, where you can find its beautiful beaches, the Ermita de Las Nieves, a wide offer of restaurants, souvenir shops and one of the ports that connects Tenerife with Gran Canaria.

In front of the Puerto de las Nieves, there was a natural monument named Dedo de Dios (finger of God). It was a finger-shaped volcanic rock. Unfortunately, it was devastated after a tropical storm in the year 2005. Now only his lower part remains. In the same way, we want to highlight the beauty of their houses in white and blue colors with marine details.

2. The beaches of Puerto de Las Nieves

In Puerto de Las Nieves village there are two main beaches, Las Nieves, opposite the new pier. As well as the Muelle beach, next to the old pier. Both beaches are calm, crystal clear and with stones. In addition, the two are very close to each other. The locals also tend to lie down to sunbathe next to the old dock or in the wood beds that they have put in Las Nieves beach. We show you below some photos of both beaches: a paradise.

3. The natural pools of Las Salinas

There is a walk that joins the Puerto de Las Nieves with the well-known natural pools of Agaete named Las Salinas. Years ago it was a salt mine, hence its name. Nowadays it is a perfect place for the bath formed by three pools of volcanic rock with sea water. However, we want to inform you that here it is much windier than on the beaches of Agaete and sometimes it is uncomfortable to be. The best time to enjoy the pools is in the months of September and October.

4. Agaete town

About 15 minutes walk from the Puerto de Las Nieves we find the center of Agaete. We highlight the Church of La Concepción and its square. In the same way, the town itself is very beautiful with white houses and Canarian balconies. Here takes place the popular party of La Rama that we will summarize in the following lines.

5. La rama fest

Finally, one of the things to do in Agaete is come to one of the most popular festivals of the Canary Islands: La Rama de Agaete. La rama means “branch”. The feast of La Rama takes place every 4th of August and thousands of people from all over the island and even from other Canary Islands gather there. The act begins next to the church of La Concepción. All the assistants and picturesque papagüevos (big head walking dolls) dance through the town to the sound of the band of Agaete while they shake their branches of pine or eucalyptus. La Rama ends when it arrives to the beach and Church of Las Nieves.

6. Restaurants in Agaete

The best restaurants in Agaete are in Puerto de Las Nieves. There is a wide gastronomic offer, especially fresh fish restaurants and local food in general. Our favorite for fresh fish is El Cápita restaurant with the best value for money in the area. An excellent service, with views of Puerto de Las Nieves and the cliffs of Agaete. We recommend you to order the grilled fish and the gofio. On the other hand, if you want to eat something fast or your budget is smaller, you also have the option of El Mesón del Bocadillo, with a very curious sandwich offer.

Moreover, there is an a la carte restaurant at the top of the Cordial Roca Negra hotel where you can have a very nice meal at the Rocktop SkyBar restaurant. As the restaurant is in the roof terrace, you can have awesome views to Agaete and one of the best sunsets of Gran Canaria.
