Things to do in Puerto de Mogán, Gran Canaria

Puerto de Mogán is one of the most beautiful towns on the island of Gran Canaria and, therefore, one of the most touristic areas. It can be said that in this part of the island you will always see the sun or at least if it is a cloudy day, it will never be cold. In addition, it is one of the European holiday destinations with the highest number of sunny days per year and with an average annual temperature of 19.2ºC. For this reason, it is a happy town where its people will always receive you with kindness.

If it is the first time you travel to the island, we consider it to be one of your list of places to visit in Gran Canaria. In the next few lines we are going to highlight its main attractions. Let’s start!

1. Puerto de Mogán beach

It is a small beach about 200 meters long and with numerous services. For example, it is one of the accessible beaches of Gran Canaria. In other words, it is suitable for people with reduced mobility and, therefore, easily accessible for prams. In addition, it has showers and an area to rent sun beds and umbrellas.

Likewise, we can say that it is a perfect beach for families because of its calm waters. In addition, on the shore you can rent skates with a slide, practice diving, among other water sports.

On the opposite side of the main Puerto de Mogan beach we have another of the beaches of Puerto de Mogán. It is a virgin cove of stones with a little dock where you can bathe by accessing some stairs. On this side, the water is much cleaner as it is more open to the ocean.

2. Enjoy the sunset

Keep in mind that being located in the southwest of the island, one of the best things to do in Puerto de Mogán is enjoy its sunset. Below we show you one of the popular spots to enjoy the best sunsets in Gran Canaria.

To get here, you’ll need to head to the dock area and skirt the coast along the mountain to the west. Access can be dangerous because it is not conditioned at all, so if you go, be very careful and, please, do not leave garbage! You can also see the sunset from the beach, but it is not exactly the same view.

3. Market Puerto de Mogán

The market is one of the main Mogan attractions. If you feel like going shopping, here you will find a wide variety of souvenirs, Canarian crafts, flowers, clothes and some gastronomic products from the Canary Islands. What day is the Puerto de Mogán market? It takes place every Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is an open air market which takes place in the centre of this fishermen’s neighborhood.

Keep in mind that this is one of the most tourist markets and tours in Gran Canaria. That is to say, it is not a market where we locals go shopping, such as Teror or San Mateo. Anyway, if you want to visit the town, you should know which day the Mogán market is in case you want to make it coincide or in case you prefer to visit it on a quieter day.

4. A walk through the Mogan marina & old village of Mogan Puerto

This popular fishing village from the Canary Islands is surrounded by sailboats, fishing boats and canals. Also noteworthy are the famous white houses with colored stripes and bougainvillea climbing their walls.

Therefore, taking a walk through the old village and Mogan marina are two must see places in Puerto de Mogán, do not stay only with the landscape of its beach. In fact, both its marina and its houses with unique architecture full of bougainvillea are two of the most Instagrammable places in Gran Canaria. Or well, let’s say more photographed for those who do not use this social network 🙂

5. Boat trip Puerto de Mogan

Another of the things to do in Puerto de Mogan to enjoy the sea is a boat trip which includes a stop to snorkel in Gran Canaria. Specifically, at El Perchel beach. The route includes navigation to the virgin zone of Tasarte.

If you prefer to sail by private boat, in Puerto de Mogán there are also tours on a private boat with skipper for 5 hours and for a maximum of 8 people. It departs from the harbour and below is all the information to hire this activity.

Finally, a few minutes by car is the Puerto Rico marina, from where other different boat trips depart, such as dolphin and whale watching in Gran Canaria. If you travel to Gran Canaria, this is one of the best family plans to do.

6. Viewpoint Puerto de Mogán

Another place to visit in Puerto de Mogán is its viewpoint. Of course, to get there, there are a few steps. So that, it is not accessible for prams or people with reduced mobility.

From the top you will enjoy one of the most popular views of the town with the sea at the background. Then you can take all the photos you want as a souvenir and proof of travel to the Canary Islands.

Try to visit it early in the morning or late at night, because the walk in the summer could be hard and hot!

7. Puerto de Mogan submarine

In addition to Mogán beach as the main play area for children, the yellow submarine in Puerto de Mogán is one of the best tours for families to enjoy the sea. The Submarine Adventure Gran Canaria activity lasts about 40 minutes and takes you to discover the species and seabed of the area thanks to its spectacular crystals. In the following image you can see it sailing in the harbour.

8. Other beaches of Mogán: Puerto Rico & Amadores

If you are going to spend a few days staying in Mogán, you should know that the municipality has other very touristic beaches such as Puerto Rico and Amadores. Both with a wide range of water sports such as Jet Ski, banana, and so on. In any case, if you are going to hire a car, we always recommend visiting other beaches in the south such as Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and San Agustín. Puerto Rico and Amadores are ultra crowded. Well, actually Playa del Inglés too, but it is nearby Maspalomas.

Veneguera beach, Mogan

Within the municipality of Mogán there are other practically virgin beaches to visit if you want to get closer to the most authentic side of Gran Canaria. Some of our favorites are Veneguera, Tiritaña and Tasarte. Of course, prepare to drive through curves and dirt.

9. The Mogan valley (old town) and Los Azulejos

If you have the opportunity to travel by car or find a car hire for a day, another of the places to do in Mogán is to visit the old town of the Mogan Valley. Even make a road trip until Los Azulejos, the most famous colorful mountains in Gran Canaria. The drive to both places is spectacular and, believe us, you will be surprised by the landscape. Below we show you one of the photos we did in a roadtrip!

10. Restaurants Puerto de Mogán

In Puerto de Mogán we find the marina and the fishing harbour. So for lunch we recommend to try the fresh fish and seafood from Mogán coast at the Cofradía de Pescadores restaurant (fishermen’s Guild). In addition, in the Fishermen’s Guild you can taste good typical food from the Canary Islands, where you can’t miss the delicious avocado from Mogán. Another restaurant in Mogán that we recommend is the Beach Club Faro with a perfect view of the sunset and Mogán beach.

You also have the option of trying one of the few Michelin Star restaurants in Gran Canaria in Puerto de Mogán. Here it is Los Guayres restaurant with a tasting menu.

Finally, you can find the best Italian ice creams at Gelatomanía, right in front of the beach. There is no holiday without an ice cream. Its promenade is full of restaurants and bars of Mediterranean food (most of them Spanish and Italian), but the truth is that we haven’t tried them because they seem very touristy.

Puerto de Mogan apartments & hotels

If you come to Puerto de Mogán for holidays you should know that it is an ideal destination to stay and enjoy the sun. We recommend that you take a look at the hotels Mogan Playa de Cordial hotel, the Radisson Blu Puerto de Mogán with spa and THe Puerto de Mogán hotel THe Senses Collection. They are the most emblematic hotels in Puerto de Mogán. Below you can see all the Puerto de Mogán accommodation options.

How to get to Puerto de Mogán in Gran Canaria

From Gran Canaria airport you can take the public bus (guagua) number 91 to Puerto de Mogan. This bus departs from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and makes several stops (including the airport), so the travel to the south is somewhat long. Another option that many travelers choose is to hire a private transfer. You can see the prices of the transfers and make your reservation here. If you are staying in Playa del Inglés, from here you would travel around 30 kilometers by car. That is about 30 minutes.
