Pozo Izquierdo beach. Windsurf, yummy food and good vibes

13/02/2022 Por Local Guide Gran Canaria

Pozo Izquierdo beach and town belongs to the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana. It is located southeast of Gran Canaria and is one of the windiest areas of the island. Thanks to these conditions in the wind and, therefore, in the waves, Pozo is a worldwide claim to practice sports such as windsurfing. But Pozo is not only windsurfing, its environment is very local and with good vibes and we are going to tell you everything in the next few lines.

In addition, next to the beach they have recently conditioned a solarium and stairs with direct access to the sea. Below we will mention you all the reasons why you should visit this area of Gran Canaria. Do not miss the end of the article where we mention a great place to have breakfast with sea views.

Pozo Izquierdo, Gran Canaria

As we told you, this area of the coast of Gran Canaria is known worldwide for its good wind and wave conditions for windsurfing throughout the year. In fact, the World Windsurfing Championship has been held in Pozo Izquierdo on several occasions. It is included in the world circuit of the Association of Professional Windsurfers. Next we show you a photo during one of the championships.

On the other hand, next to the houses on the seafront promenade, you can swim in peace, since windsurfing is not allowed here for safety reasons. Of course, try to check the wind forecast before visiting it, otherwise it will be a bit uncomfortable for you. Below we give you all the information to take into account about this authentic place of Gran Canaria.

The beach is mainly pebbles, although it has several sandy areas, especially when the tide is out. Similarly, on one of the side docks of the beach they have recently built a kind of wooden solarium to lie down and sunbathe.

Likewise, if you don’t feel like stepping on the beach to take a dip, you can access the sea by means of stairs with railings that have been enabled next to the solarium. We can see it both in the previous left photo at the bottom and below.

Finally, you should know that the beach has few services. That is to say, here you will not be able to rent sun beds or umbrellas, nor does it have toilets or surveillance. However, it has totally new showers where you can remove the saltpeter. From the solarium towards Arinaga we will have views of the coast of Bahía de Formas (photo of the man and the dog, but at the background). It is another well-known area for practicing different forms of windsurfing. In fact, this is where most of the introductory courses in this type of water sports are taught.

Restaurant El Viento. A delicious stop with sea views

Regarding the restaurants in Pozo Izquierdo, a friend recently recommended El Viento Restaurant for breakfast and, after trying it, we wanted to share it with you. The place is located on the first line with sea views. El Viento has a terrace, ideal for windless days, and also an interior dining room with glass windows on all sides.

The views are not the only attraction, their homemade bread is one of the best we have tasted on the island. We recommend the “French omelette breakfast”. Comes a two-egg omelette with ham and cheese with homemade toasted bread with seasoned tomato + extra avocado. For dessert they have cakes, also homemade. We tried the cheese one, although they all looked very good. So far we have not gone to lunch, but while we were enjoying our brunch, people were arriving to eat and our eyes went to the fried fish with potatoes with mojo sauce.

So now you know another nice place to come for breakfast, brunch, lunch or even dinner in Gran Canaria. Super recommended. Well, what do you think about Pozo Izquierdo? Without a doubt, we believe that it deserves an opportunity to take a walk and eat delicious food with views of the sea. And, if it’s not windy, lie down in your new solarium with a dip included. Until next time localguiders!
