Ojos de Garza beach & lunch with sea views

25/06/2021 Por Local Guide Gran Canaria

The Ojos de Garza beach is located on the coast of Telde, very close to the Gran Canaria airport. In total it is about 500 meters long. It is at the end of the Ojos de Garza ravine where you can see a perfect division. To the left of the mouth of the ravine the sand is brown and gray. On the right, there are black boulders. It is bordered by low lava cliffs from different eras. And, at the end of the bay, next to the airport, we find the Roque de Gando.

It is characterized because when the tide rises, the water reaches almost to the houses that are on the front line. So that, we recommend your visit when the tide is low for greater enjoyment. On the beach there are some showers. There is also free parking, but it is very scarce. Therefore, you should avoid weekends and bank holidays. If not, try to go as soon as possible.

Where to eat in Ojos de Garza

On the other hand, next to the beach houses there is a bar where you can taste typical dishes of the Canarian cuisine. It’s the Zurita bar. In addition, the bar only has a terrace and all the tables have sea view due to its privileged location. As it is the only bar in the area, it is in high demand and, if you go later than 1:30 p.m., you will probably have to take a number and wait your turn. The bar has a wide menu of local food at a great price. In its menu we can highlight the variety of seafood. In the same way, the service is good enough to be a beach bar. The best, the views, it seems that you are eating on a boat.

Another alternative that we propose to you to eat is to visit Ojos de Garza village and go to the bar Dos Hermanos. Here you can buy a delicious calamari sandwich to take away and enjoy it on the shore of Ojos de Garza beach.

Sports by the sea

There is a part of the beach where you can practice windsurfing. This area is more windy and is practically full of boulders. It is the part that is closest to the airport.

On the other hand, if your thing is trail running, there are several dirt roads around and you can reach the beaches of Tufia and Aguadulce. There are some options, but we recommend the one on the coast so you can appreciate its beauty. The rest of the trails are between plantations and crops. If you prefer walking,  along the coast is also possible because the distance is not so much. Keep in mind that it is somewhat windy.

Recycling & art

Next to the Ojos de Garza beach, to the right of the ravine looking towards the sea, you will find the artworks of Antonio “Peñita“. This man has been making art with things that nobody wants for years. For example, with sinks and water closet, with glass bottles, with chairs, with bottles of perfume, tiles, etc.

If you have time, ask the locals for him. He will show you his mother’s house and his hidden creations. And, if he likes you, he’ll even invite you to a coffee. In the following video you can get to know more Ojos de Garza and this peculiar artist.
