From December 2021 we have three Michelin star restaurants in Gran Canaria. The winners are the restaurants La Aquarela, Los Guayres and Poemas by Hermanos Padrón. Both Los Guayres and La Aquarela have had a star since 2019 and both are located in the municipality of Mogán, in the south of Gran Canaria. On the other hand, at the last Michelin gala in December 2021, the Poemas restaurant got its first star. Congratulations!
If that’s okay with you, in the next few lines we are going to give you all the details and personal impressions of these three restaurants that we have had the pleasure of trying. Here we go!
Michelin Star restaurants in Gran Canaria
As we anticipated, since 2019 the restaurants La Aquarela, nearby Anfi Beach and, on the other hand, Los Guayres, in Puerto de Mogán, have been renewing their corresponding Michelin star in recent years. And, for the first time, in the next 2022 Michelin Guide there will be three Michelin star restaurants in Gran Canaria at the same time.
As we see it, if you only had the option of choosing a restaurant for your budget or limited time on the island, we liked La Aquarela much more than the other two. The reasons are three: inclusion of Canarian product in practically all the dishes on its menu, setting and service. In any case, the three restaurants are highly recommended and we congratulate them on this great achievement.
La Aquarela restaurant
We can say that La Aquarela is one of the best restaurants in Gran Canaria. It has it all: products from Gran Canaria and other islands, an explosion of flavors, presentation, service of 10 and an unbeatable environment. In its kitchen is the Canarian chef Germán Ortega, who is clear that the local product must be the protagonist. The owner, Gregorio Fernández, is also in charge of La Aquarela every day. In addition, you can see how there is a great team that loves what they do and that shows in the result.
At La Aquarela restaurant they offer two tasting menus that you can choose from. On the one hand, the vegetarian Tierra Menu for € 89 (without pairing). And, on the other hand, the Experience Menu that includes meat, seafood and fish for € 98, without drinks. The pairing is optional in both menus and has a cost of € 65 per person. In any case, they have an extensive wine and sparkling wine list. We are sure that its brilliant maitre sommelier Nikola Ivicic will be able to advise you on your choice.
Finally, keep in mind that during the summer you can enjoy a dreamy sunset as in the photo that we show you at the beginning. Try to book for the aperitif at 8:00 pm so you don’t miss it.
Los Guayres restaurant
Regarding Los Guayres restaurant, it is located within the Cordial Mogán Playa hotel in the Puerto de Mogán area. Although the site is beautiful, it is difficult to compare with the surroundings of La Aquarela. The genre that they include in their menus is spectacular (oysters, red prawns, foie, suckling pig …), but we notice less prominence of local product. This Michelin star restaurant in Gran Canaria offers three tasting menus: the Tasting Menu for € 105, the Classic Tasting Menu for € 110 and the Great Tasting Menu for € 120. As you go up in price, the number of dishes to taste increases. Pairings are not included and cost € 39, € 45 and € 52, respectively.
In the kitchen of the Los Guayres restaurant we will meet Alexis Álvarez, another chef from Gran Canaria who receives this award. Congratulations and keep it up!
Poemas by Hermanos Padrón
On December 14, 2021, the Poemas by Hermanos Padrón restaurant received a Michelin star for the first time. The Poemas restaurant is located inside the Santa Catalina hotel, a Royal Hideaway hotel of the Barceló chain. It is the oldest hotel in the Canary Islands that remains open today. Both the hotel and the Poemas restaurant are located in a unique setting in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The Hermanos Padrón have been renewing a Michelin Star for several years at their restaurant El Rincón de Juan Carlos on the island of Tenerife. In the case of Poemas, they have delegated their gastronomic project on the island of Gran Canaria to the Canarian chef Iciar Pérez, being the chef of this establishment.
The curious thing about this restaurant and what differentiates it from the other two Michelin Star restaurants in Gran Canaria, is that you will be able to eat both à la carte and enjoy its tasting menu. If you eat à la carte, there are not many options and the price per person will not fall below € 70. On the other hand, the menu has a cost per person of € 120 (without drinks).
