Cross Gran Canaria north-south by enduro MTB

26/09/2021 Por Local Guide Gran Canaria

This is the most epic tour you can do with an Enduro MTB bike in Gran Canaria. It is a route that crosses the island from north coast to south coast. It is certainly not suitable for all riders because of its toughness on the uphill and downhill. Anyway, you can always divide the track and do it in two days or take a look at the route we have from the Pico de Las Nieves to the Maspalomas Lighthouse (coming soon).

Cross Gran Canaria north-south by Enduro MTB bike

As you may know, Gran Canaria is a volcanic island, full of ravines and mountains. Therefore, on this route you will face a lot of slope in a short distance. Therefore, making a route from coast to coast by bike, whatever the modality, is a challenge. However, it is particularly hard to do it on the ground on an Enduro MTB, All Mountain or Down Country bike.

✔ Tips before doing the route

It is a route that you will necessarily have to do from the north to the south. We do not recommend doing it the other way, since you will spend a lot of time walking. As you can see in the characteristics, it is quite long, the climb will be at least 5 hours. We will pass through beautiful places on the island such as Firgas, Valsendero and Cruz de Tejeda during the climb. At this last point you can buy food and water.

During the entire route you will have to carry the bike about 5 times, but without much difficulty. We recommend leaving first thing in the morning, even at night if you want to complete it in just one day. If you are going to go on an electric bike, it will be necessary to carry two batteries, since the climbs on land are steep and are broken in certain parts.

During the descent we recommend that you make several stops to rest. The descents are mostly made of stone and are quite tiring. After reaching the peak of Pico de Las Nieves, refill water and remember that there is still the ascent of La Manzanilla (337m of positive slope), so the effort is not over. From the highest point, there are still 3 to 5 hours to reach the Maspalomas Lighthouse, depending on your physical condition and the stops you make.
