El Confital beach, an amazing preserved bay in the city

10/04/2021 Por Local Guide Gran Canaria

The El Confital beach and its bay it is a Special Area of Conservation located in the city Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Specially nearby the neighborhoods La Isleta and Las Coloradas. It is one of the best places where you can have the most incredible view from Las Canteras beach bay.

We could say that both beaches are connected, since if we walk from La Puntilla across the sea promenade, we will reach El Confital.

The beach is accessible by foot and by car. You can also get here by bike, but you should know that the road is a dirt one. For the pedestrians there is an awesome promenade which borders the mountain with a view to El Confital beach. Below you can see a bit from the walk (metal structure).

Previously in El Confital there were illegal shacks where people without resources lived. However, in 2004 they were totally eradicated and their residents were relocated to other homes in the city. Once the area was cleared, a nice walk was built along the beach. Therefore, it is now more accessible on foot than before and its image in general has improved considerably.

El Confital beach

It is an area practically frequented 100% by locals. In general it is the meeting point of families and friends to organize grills and meals on the beach on weekends. During the week, it is a much quieter place where you will practically be alone. Its water is also chosen to practice surfing and bodyboarding. In fact, on this beach several surf world championships have been held.

On the other hand, in addition to the new wooden avenue to walk, the mountains of El Confital are a paradise to practice trail running. The space is quite large and you can even reach Las Coloradas and its new viewpoint if you go up the mountain. In fact, we have for you a MTB route that runs through this area of the city. On the other hand, if you continue along the coast you will reach the Military Zone of La Isleta where you will have to turn around, since access is prohibited. We leave you a link with more places to run in Las Palmas.

Nudist beach

In the same way, there is a nudist area on the beach. So that, it is one of the few nudist beaches in Gran Canaria. Despite the very good waves that are behind the reef that runs through El Confital, there is also a quiet bathing area. There are some small saltwater pools and mini beaches of coarse sand or smooth stone to bathe safely because of the waves. Of course, you have to be careful not to slip if you walk on the rocks.

In this beach there is no service of umbrellas and sun beds and neither any surveillance. You will find yourself in a totally natural environment with views of Las Canteras and the mountains of the center and north of Gran Canaria. Finally, from here you can see magical sunsets, especially in the summer months.

Provisionally swimming is prohibited

Since April 2017, the Public Health Area of the Canary Islands Government has banned swimming because it detects bacterial contamination in its waters. Until now the citizens make practically normal life, but there is still no green light for swimming. In fact, environmentalists have given the black flag because of the environmental situation of its coast. We hope to have good news soon. Meanwhile, we invite you to get to know it and stroll through this protected area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that you can not miss. Just one thing: please be careful if you decide to swim!

Finally, we have prepared for you some Gran Canaria travel guides where you can access to authentic places and restaurants of the island. Forget about planing your holidays now!
