In this article we would like to share with you a circular hiking route through the Agaete Valley that starts and ends in Puerto de Las Nieves, in the north of Gran Canaria. During this route you will be able to appreciate one of the most beautiful landscapes hidden on the island, as it passes through Era de Berbique at an altitude of over 600 metres. The trail ends with breathtaking views of the north coast of the island. If you’re up for it, we’ll give you all the details below.

Circular Agaete Valley from Puerto de Las Nieves
As we said, this is a circular route that starts at Puerto de Las Nieves and crosses the entire Agaete ravine. Once you reach the district of San Pedro (Agaete Valley), the ascent begins along one of the most spectacular trails in Gran Canaria. At the end of the ascent, you will reach the Era de Berbique with views of the valley and the steep mountains of Tamadaba. If it has rained recently, you may find some water falling down the slopes of these mountains and enjoy a green landscape that will remind you of Monte Pavón.

Trail characteristics
This circular route through the Agaete Valley is not recommended for beginners due to its length and gradient. Although if you have done the Way of St James of Gran Canaria, you will be able to do this one. We did it running on the flats and at a good pace on the climbs with a break of about 15 minutes and it took us 3:50 hours. We also stopped several times to record the video of the route and take photos. So, if you walk it, it will probably take you 5 to 6 hours, depending on your physical condition and the stops you make.
Distance | 17 km |
Estimated duration | 4-6 hours |
Total ascent | 930 m |
Level | Intermediate-advanced |
Circular | Yes |
Picnic area | No |
Suitable for children | No |
In any case, if you want to shorten it, you can leave from Valle de Agaete instead of Puerto de Las Nieves. However, you will have to take a bus to and from Puerto de Las Nieves. Or take two cars to avoid the first part of the ravine, as the route also ends at the port. Although the ravine of Agaete is not so worthwhile, the final descent from Berbique to Las Nieves is a real blast. We were lucky because the day was clear and the mountains were super green as we showed.

The main points of interest that you will come across during the trail are:
- Puerto de Las Nieves
- Agaete Valley
- Los Castaños farm and Los Berrazales winery
- Era de Berbique and Berbique caves
- Views of the slopes of Tamadaba (reminiscent of Yosemite National Park, USA), the west coast of Gran Canaria (the famous Dragon’s tail) and Tenerife (clear days).

Important details to bear in mind
On the steepest part of the climb up to Berbique from San Pedro there is a metal chain to hold on to for support on the ascent, which we assume is a great help when the path is muddy. There is also a fence on the other side of the path, so the whole route is quite safe. However, bear in mind that along the Agaete ravine there are two small climbs (about three steps each) where you have to climb over some rocks without much difficulty (if you are an agile person). One of these climbs will be to get out of the ravine through an abandoned farmyard as we show in the video, although the track will be of great help to you.

It is important to note that during the walk from San Pedro to Puerto de Las Nieves you will not find any supplies. Therefore, we recommend that you carry enough water and food for the final part of the route. In total, for the whole track, we recommend at least one litre of water per person and snacks. Please note that during the summer months the scenery can change. Moreover, it can get a bit warmer, so maybe you have to take more water with you and start very early.
