Along the north coast of Gran Canaria there are many areas to enjoy the sea, one of them is El Charco de San Lorenzo. Here we have a kind of natural swimming pool with sea water in which you can bathe and swim. In the Charco de San Lorenzo you can enjoy the Atlantic Ocean in a non-tourist environment since there is nothing around: some boulder beaches and a camping site for caravans. We tell you all the details below, so keep reading!
The Charco de San Lorenzo
Charco means puddle in English. This charco or natural pool is located in Moya municipality. It is one of the few bathing areas in Moya, since the municipality has very few kilometers of coastline. The truth is that the site is not bad since it has showers, public toilets, railings and stairs to access the water, as well as an esplanade where you can lie down to sunbathe. Also, right next there is a restaurant (the house that appears in the photo below).
You should bear in mind that in the north of the island it is sometimes cloudy. You can take a look at our post about the weather in Gran Canaria to understand a little why. A few meters away is the seaside neighborhood El Roque, a beautiful postcard from the north of Gran Canaria.
If you want to continue investigating the area, the same road that took you to El Charco crosses the entire coast until you reach the town of San Lorenzo. There is a small avenue and a few bars where you can have a coffee. If you don’t have time, it is not essential either. BEWARE, the beaches around here are of boulders and quite dangerous due to their waves and currents. In El Charco there is no problem since it has breakwaters.
Where to eat around San Lorenzo
To eat nearby you have the restaurant El Charco. A highly recommended local food place, but watch out for the portions. The last time we went we ordered an octopus salad and a tray of fried fish (two people). However, with these dishes 4 people could have eaten. With which, we paid almost € 30 per person without dessert or wine. Maybe the waiter should have warned us it was too much food… We know that the fresh fish is expensive, but not that much…
In any case the place is very nice, you can eat with a view of the sea (if you get a table by the window) and the food show that they are of very good quality. If you go on the weekend, try to be there before 2:00 pm so as not to wait long, as it is quite a busy place.
