In 2020, the island had approximately 870.000 inhabitants.. As for the demonym, they are informally called canariones, although the official name is grancanarios or grancanarias. The colors of its flag are yellow and blue.
La capital of Gran Canaria is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is the largest city in the Canary Islands ahead of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with about 380.000 inhabitants in 2020. Furthermore, it is located in the top 10 of the largest and most important cities in Spain. As we see it, it is the best area where to stay in Gran Canaria to see the island. Geography
The island of Gran Canaria, like all the Canary Islands, is volcanic origin. It is characterized by being a mountainous island, full of ravines and spectacular beaches. Until recently it was believed that the highest peak on the island was Las Nieves Peak. However, it has recently been shown that The highest point in Gran Canaria is Morro de la Agujereada with 1956 meters of altitude.
You should know that in In 2019, part of the island territory was declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Specifically, this distinction was received by Risco Caído (an ancient troglodyte town) and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria. This town has a total of 21 caves, two of them (caves C6 and C7) stand out for their astronomical, ceremonial and symbolic importance. Finally, cave C6 is the main protagonist, since it has an excavated light channel that projects the light of the sun or the full moon.
The municipalities that are part of the territory that was named a World Heritage Site are Artenara, Gáldar, Tejeda and Agaete.
What to see and do in Gran Canaria
Next we are going to take a brief tour of the main tourist attractions and Things to see and do in Gran Canaria: the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and capital of the island, its more than 80 beaches and natural pools, towns, protected natural spaces, natural monuments, its gastronomy and museums. We summarize it all for you below.
✔ What to see in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The island capital must be one of the essential places to visit in Gran Canaria. Below we will review the places that you should take into account within the city:
*Vegeta neighborhood
A walk through your historic center of Vegueta is a must. Here you can visit the main attractions of the neighborhood such as the Cathedral of the Canary Islands (Diocese of the Canary Islands), in the Plaza Mayor de Santa Ana itself. Also the Vegueta market, the Pérez Galdós Theater, its pedestrian streets, the church of San Antonio Abad, the hermitage of the Holy Spirit, the Casa Museo-Colón, the Plaza de Santo Domingo, etc.
The city has a very great link with Columbus, andwho visited Las Palmas de Gran Canaria before discovering America. On the other hand, a few steps away we recommend you walk through the Triana neighborhood, one of the oldest and most beautiful in the capital. Here the Literary Cabinet, the Alameda de Colón, the municipal library, San Telmo and all its pedestrian streets stand out.
*Playa de Las Canteras
Another of Las Palmas' claims is Las Canteras, one of the best urban beaches in Spain. It has a pleasant walk where there is a wide range of restaurants. Las Canteras It is also linked to a walk with El Confital, another of the places to visit in the city.
Finally, you should know that one of the most important festivals in the capital and that we did not mention before is San Juan. Every June 23 at night citizens gather in Las Canteras to celebrate this holiday. The most daring even take a swim in the sea during the night. Its fireworks are spectacular starting at 00:00 at night. Finally, you should know that the time in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria It can be cloudy during the summer months due to the trade winds known to locals as donkey belly.
✔ The best beaches in Gran Canaria
Being an island, you can imagine the number of beaches that can be enjoyed and visited. You will find the most touristy and well-known ones in the south of Gran Canaria.. We mention them below:
*Playa del Inglés
En Playa del Inglés You will find practically all the shower services, hammocks and toilets. Also has nudist zone. The bad thing is that its surroundings are quite crowded and it is a very touristy area.
*Maspalomas Beach
This beach joins that of Playa del Inglés at the tip and, therefore, you can walk from one to the other. Something we recommend you do if you are going to visit Gran Canaria. It also has a nudist area and all services (including a spa). It is famous for its Maspalomas Dunes and the beautiful lighthouse that accompanies it.
*Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico It is one of the places that has been most affected by human hands on the island. And there is not even a meter of land available to build from the coast to the end of the ravine and the slopes of the mountains. It's horrible. Still, there are many tourists who love it. Possibly, for cheap alcohol, its nightlife, the offer of fast food places and the good weather.
*Anfi del Mar
Anfi del Mar and the entire empire that surrounds it was promoted by a Norwegian businessman who was allowed to bring Caribbean sand and build an artificial island beside. It's about the Maroa Island heart-shaped and where there is currently a beach club. Another place that today is enjoyed by millions of tourists.
*Lovers
Finally, another of the tourist beaches on the island is Amadores, a fusion between Puerto Rico and Anfi del Mar. That is, its beach has Caribbean sand and its slopes are completely full of apartments and resorts. Of course, we are not going to deny that from here there is one of the best sunsets in Gran Canaria.
*Playa de Las Canteras
As we see it, one of the best beaches in Gran Canaria is in the capital and is the playa de Las Canteras. There are almost 3 kilometers of golden sand to enjoy sunbathing, walking, surfing or snorkeling. Las Canteras stands out for its wide range of restaurants, as well as for The bar. A volcanic barrier that makes the waves calm and allows you to enjoy swimming safely. You should know that there is an area that is known as The Cicer where the bar is not and is ideal for surfing.
On the other hand, in the south there are other tourist areas to enjoy the Atlantic such as San Agustín, Las Burras, Playa del Águila y el Pirata or Morro Besudo. Likewise, in The Telde coast has a good level of beaches, although much more local. These are those of Melenara, Salinetas, La Garita, Ojos de Garza and Tufia.
At the same time, in the west of the island we find the most virgin beaches and less visited. One of the most paradisiacal and difficult to reach is the Güigü beach, Guguy or Gui gui, within the Worldwide biosphere reserve. We have a detailed article about Güigüí so you can get to know her on your own.
*Natural pools of Gran Canaria
On the other hand, The island also stands out for its numerous natural pools. You can find most of them in the northern area where the coast is more volcanic. That is to say, in the north few beaches have sand and, therefore, it has been decided to prepare bathing areas with sea water, with their respective breakwaters and access by stairs. The best-known natural pools are those of Las Salinas de Agaete, La Laja in Las Palmas, Roque Prieto in Guía and El Agujero de Gáldar.
✔ Natural Monuments and Protected Spaces
Part of the island territory is part of the World Biosphere Reserve. No more, no less than 100.000 land and sea hectares that cover seven municipalities: Artenara, Tejeda, La Aldea de San Nicolás, Agaete, San Mateo, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Mogán. Within the spaces covered by the Biosphere Reserve, we find core areas, that is, with a greater amount of notable natural resources. These nuclei are the Inagua Comprehensive Natural Reserve, which we will talk to you about in the next few lines, and the Güigüí Special Natural Reserve.. Finally, we will mention some of the most representative natural monuments of the island.
*Inagua Reserve
It is one of the few comprehensive nature reserves in the Canary archipelago. Protection granted by the Government of the Canary Islands due to the importance, fragility and representativeness of its ecosystems, communities, biological or geological elements. Regarding the native fauna of Inagua, The Blue Finch lives here. Regarding the flora, endangered endemisms stand out such as the Inagua jarilla, the hairy jarilla and the pine forest cockscomb.
We recommend that you take a look at this hiking route that starts from the Fuente de Los Azulejos and go through Inagua. To travel certain areas of this route you must ask permission from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.
*Tamadaba Natural Park
Tamadaba is one of the few remaining virgin areas on the island. The flora that predominates here is a spectacular forest of canary pine. The space covers more than 7.000 hectares and is also within the Biosphere Reserve. One of the most visited points in Tamadaba, in addition to its pine forest, is the Balcony Viewpoint, in La Aldea de San Nicolás. You can also visit the Llanos de La Mimbre Viewpoint.
On the other hand, you should keep in mind that in 2019, a large forest fire devastated part of the Tamadaba pine forest. Hopefully, the burned areas will recover soon.
*Comprehensive Natural Reserve of Barranco Oscuro
Between the municipalities of Moya and Valleseco we find one of the most important ravines in Gran Canaria: the Oscuro ravine. It houses one of the largest samples of laurel forest on the island and floristic riches, since it welcomes more than 40 species endemic to the Canary Islands, 12 of them unique to Gran Canaria.
*Natural Monument of Roque Nublo
We can affirm that the Roque Nublo es one of the symbols of identity of the island. This Natural Monument is within the municipality of Tejeda y It is part of the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria. This Roque is shaped like a monolith and is one of the highest points in Gran Canaria. You can visit it on foot and here we explain how. The surroundings and views from here are unmatched. Without a doubt, a good way to appreciate the contrast of the island's landscapes.
Surely on your visit you will pass through Cruz de Tejeda, a very typical place to make a stop during your visit to the summit of Gran Canaria.
*Roque Bentayga
Here we have another of the symbols of Gran Canaria, both for its history and its shape. Many even confuse it with the Nublo. At his feet there is a interpretation center where they will make you discover the importance of the Bentayga and its relationship with the aborigines of the island. At the same time, it can be visited on foot along a small path. Below we leave you with an image of the basket that perfectly frames the Bentayga in the background.
*Ravine Las Vacas
Another of the places that many travelers want to visit when they travel to Gran Canaria is the ravine Las Vacas, although the reality is that they are the Colored Tobas. The site can be visited in less than 10 minutes and is very trendy. We do not recommend going just to see it, since it is not that big of a deal and many people only go for the Instagram photo.
✔ The most beautiful towns in Gran Canaria
The towns are part of the culture of the destinations. As we see it, a way of know the most authentic side of the places is approaching its people. That is, to its quiet towns and hamlets. As we see it most beautiful towns in Gran Canaria are the following:

In this article we mention the popular festivals of Gran Canaria most knownAs well as pilgrimages in Gran Canaria which you can not miss.
*Festivals of the Virgen del Pino, Teror
Every September 7 and 8, residents usually visit the patron saint of Gran Canaria, Nuestra Señora del Pino, from different parts of the island. Many travel by car, but the tradition is to walk from the surrounding towns and municipalities. One of the best-known departures is from the town of Tamaraceite. It is approximately 3 hours of walking. Upon arriving at the Villa Mariana of Teror the most believers visit the Virgin Our Lady of the Pine. Many others go directly for their chorizo sandwich Teror as a prize.
*La Rama Festival, Agaete
This event takes place every August 4 in the town of Agaete and Puerto de Las Nieves. A tradition that has already become a macro festival in which locals dance with tree branches in their hands to the sound of the Agaete Band and the papagüevos. The tradition consists of collecting a branch in the Tirma mountain and bringing it to this town to "ask the gods for rain in times of drought." Formerly the branches were beaten in the sea, now they are shown to Our Lady of the Snows. Like most popular festivals, the tradition has practically become a bottle in the street. This does not mean that many places continue to follow the tradition to the letter.
*El Charco Festival, La Aldea de San Nicolás
This is another of the island's popular festivals that takes place in a large puddle that forms next to La Aldea beach. It is celebrated every September 11 to remember an ancient traditional fishing technique called la embarked. That is, they poured the sap of plants such as tabaiba over the puddle, which caused a sedative effect on the fish. In this way, they could be easily caught even with their hands.
Today, The locals gather around El Charco and, at 17:00 p.m., the Mayor fires a rocket to mark the beginning of fishing. (or its simulation).
*La Vará del Pescao, Arinaga
This is another of Gran Canaria's massive festivals. It takes place in Arinaga and pays tribute to the historical link of this coastal town with the sea and fishing. Usually It is celebrated on the last Friday of August.
*Almond Blossom Festival: Valsequillo, Tejeda and Tunte
Another festival of tourist interest in Gran Canaria is the Almond Blossom festival, which is celebrated every February in the municipalities of Valsequillo, Tejeda and Tunte. During these dates Locals and visitors to Gran Canaria visit these towns to appreciate the almond trees in their splendor. At the same time, each municipality sets up several stalls selling local products to the sound of the island's folk dances. Therefore, if your visit to the island coincides with the month of February, the almond tree in bloom is something you have to see in Gran Canaria.
From our point of view, if you don't have much time on the island, one of the best places to see the almond tree in bloom is in Tejeda, one of the most beautiful towns in Spain.
*Carnivals of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Without a doubt one of the biggest attractions of the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, they are their carnivals. Depending on when Easter falls, they are usually celebrated in the months of February or March. For approximately three weeks there are various big days to celebrate: Drag Queen Gala, Los Indianos, the Day Carnival in the old town (Vegueta), the Parade, the murgas, etc. Below you can see an image of one of the stages that was set up in Santa Catalina Park for the city's Carnivals.

Weather in Gran Canaria
It is said that the climate of Gran Canaria is one of the best in the world for enjoying pleasant temperatures throughout the year. Furthermore, it is not usually an island where it rains intensely and regularly. On the other hand, The highest temperature is usually recorded in August, with an average temperature of 24,6º.
There are various microclimates on the island that make it also known as a miniature continent. That is to say, In coastal areas (especially in the south), you can go to the beach perfectly all year round. However, In inland mountainous areas, temperatures drop considerably. Therefore, during the winter months temperatures below zero can be reached in the peaks of Gran Canaria. At the same time, it may be pouring in the north and stiflingly hot in the Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve. It is said that we have the most pleasant climate in Puerto de Mogán with more hours of sunshine per year. Keep in mind that sometimes haze comes from North Africa and this usually brings suspended dust and increased temperatures.
