Arco del Coronadero by bike

28/02/2021 Por Local Guide Gran Canaria

In this post we are going to talk about a bike route through the Arco del Coronadero, in the south of Gran Canaria. It is a circular route that starts from San Agustín. The track is made up of two “loops”. One that goes to the Arco de Coronadero and another that runs through the heights of San Agustín. We recommend that you start the route with the Arco del Coronadero route and go early, as it is a very popular place and is usually crowded.

If you follow the track, you will start climbing a winding dirt track that runs near a dam and a ravine with spectacular views. At one point on the route, you have to go off the track to enter a stony path. At a certain point you can get off the trail on foot to visit the famous Arco del Coronadero.

At the top of the Arco del Coronadero you can have very beautiful views. But you have to pay attention because it cannot be seen from the path, look at the track to know when to leave and not miss this wonder.

It is important that you go up the track that passes through the dam and go down the path that passes near the cement plant (as it appears on the track). If you do it the other way around, you will hardly be able to go up riding a bicycle and you will have to walk.

Second loop: the mountains of San Agustín

The second loop of this track begins at Playa del Águila bordering the coast, then ascends along a stony path that becomes a track. Its arid landscapes are reminiscent of the Wild West, quite an experience.

Which bike is the most recommended to do the circular route of the Arco del Coronadero?

Although we did it with a Gravel Bike and 40C wheels, it would really be more comfortable to go with a double XC bike with little travel or a rigid XC with front suspension. There are some very stony downhill areas where this type of bike would help you.

What level is necessary to do this route?

Physically, if you are calm, a starter cyclist can do it without problem. On the contrary, technically you will have to get off the bike in some up and down.
