The coast of Agaete winner of #MiPlayaSinPlásticos (#MyBeachWithoutPlastic)

09/09/2020 Por Local Guide Gran Canaria

Recently Agaete has received an award that consists of cleaning waste from its coast organized by a group of volunteers. This initiative has the collaboration of the NGO Paisaje Limpio (clean landscape) and the famous adventurer Jesús Calleja.

A total of 12 beaches from the 10 coastal autonomous communities of Spain have participated in this #MiPlayaSinPlásticos (#MyBeachWithoutPlastic) contest. The beach or coast that received the most votes online was Agaete, with 119,341 votes. It was followed by the Asturian beach of San Antolín (65,771 votes) and the Valencian beach of Massamagrell (33,104 votes). The criteria that have been taken into account to pre-select the beaches have been the difficulty of access to cleaning machinery, the natural wealth, as well as the environmental value. Congratulations Agaete! Good news for Gran Canaria!

The main objective of this campaign is to make citizens aware of the need we have to keep our environment and our coasts and, therefore, our oceans clean. Furthermore, this situation has recently been aggravated by the use of disposable masks and gloves.

The collection of plastics will take place in October. We invite you to pick up what is within your reach whenever you go to the beach. It costs us nothing and we will be contributing our grain of sand. Needless to say, we have to take our garbage wherever we go in Gran Canaria and around the world: #MyBeachWithoutPlastic.
